CrtO: β−carotene ketolase
This part is an Escherichia coli codon optimized version of the ß-carotene-ketolase (CrtO-type) from Dietzia psychralcaliphila ILA-1 (GenBank: AWH95158.1).
Usage and Biology
The ß-carotene-ketolase (EC 1.14.99.63) catalyses the conversion of ß-carotene into echinenone and of echinenone into canthaxanthin (Figure 1).
The Dietzia psychralcaliphila CrtO is a 55.631 kDa protein of 528 amino acids. It's function was not yet described in the literature.
When placed under the control of the hybrid T5 promoter regulated by LacI (BBa_K4432000) or the classical pLac promoter (BBa_R0010), this part leads to the synthesis of canthaxanthin in an E. coli producing ß-carotene.
For further details, see the Main Pages on the Registry of the CrtW expression plasmids (BBa_K4432121, BBa_K4432221 and BBa_K4432321).
