It is a widely regarded catalyst that oxidizes many substrates and reduces oxygen to water.
This part of the code is laccase. Laccase, known as multicopper oxidase CueO, is found in Escherichia coli. It is a multinucleated copper-containing oxidase widely found in plants, animals and microorganisms that oxidises many reducing substrates while reducing oxygen to water, and can therefore act as an oxygen consumer (the specific mechanism of action is shown in Figure 1).
In using laccase it is necessary to consider whether to introduce a signal peptide. cueO has 516 amino acid residues, but the first 28 amino acids are signal peptides that will localise the laccase to the periplasm. If it is desired for CueO to function within the cell, the sequence corresponding to the signal peptide can be removed.
