This antimicrobial peptide is a synthetic variant of Nisin A produced naturally in Lactococcus lactis.Mutation of Serine to proline at position 29 (S29P) combined with an isoleucine to valine substitution at position 30 (I30V) helps in making Nisin PV resistant to nisin resistant protein which is expressed on the cell surface of certain pathogenic strains like Streptococcus agalactiae which can cleave Nisin A making it less active.Nisin Pv is not only resistant to NRP but also shows enhanced antimicrobial activity against S.uberis which is a main pathogen associated with Subclinical bovine mastitis.
