It encodes phytoene dehydrogenase, part of the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway, which converts Phytoene to Lycopene (Misawa, N., Nakagawa, N., Kobayashi, K., Yamano, S., Nakamura, K., and Harashima, K. 1990.
