SBLE

SBLE will express an enzyme in Starmerella bombicola which plays a catalytic role in the production pathway of sophorolipid. This enzyme can change the configuration of sophorolipid.

The gene of a new enzyme was found in the extracellular protein of S. bombicola. In the strains that lack the enzyme, there will not be any lactone-type sophorolipids. SBLE catalyzed an unusual reaction to convert acid-type sophorolipids into lactone-type sophorolipids in aqueous environment. However, it is still unclear how SBLE catalyze intermolecular lactonization in aqueous environment.
