FutA1 (iron-binding)

FutA1 is a major iron binding protein in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 that preferentially binds Fe2+ with an association of 1x10^19 M-1, but is also capable of binding Fe3+ (Katoh, Hagino & Ogawa, 2001). The binding site is composed of four tyrosine residues and one histidine residue (Koropatkin et al., 2007). Bound iron can be dissociated from the FutA1 complex by altering the pH, as binding is dependent on the histidine residue in the binding site (Koropatkin et al., 2007). FutA1 is one of four proteins that comprise the Fut iron transport system, alongside FutA2, FutB and FutC (Badarau et al., 2008). These proteins share 52% identity and exhibit high redundancy in their roles.
