This colicinE1 operon contains all three important genes for colicinE9 expression and release. The colE9 gene codes for the lethal colicinE9 protein. The gene for the colE9 immunity protein is responsible for the immunity of the producing host bacteria to the colicinE9 and is therefore controlled by a constitutive promoter. Expression of the atypical lysis protein leads finally to the lysis of the host bacteria and thereby to the release of the colicinE9.
