This gene codes Arabidopsis vacuolar proton-pumping pyrophos- phatase (H+-PPase) gene (AVP1). AVP1 uses energy derived from the hydrolysis of cytosolic inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) to orthophosphate (Pi) to actively pump protons into vacuoles. This increases acidification in vacuole, which establishes a difference in electrochemical potential for H+ across the tonoplast. The difference is used by other vacuolar transporters, such as Na+/H+ antiporters. By this process, transgenic plants overexpressing AVP1 can facilitate sequestration of Na+ into vacuole from cytoplasm  and survive under high salt conditions

TDH3-AVP1-6xHis-CYC
