Growth of E. coli BL21 cells in Yeast Nitrogen Base medium lacking tryptophan. The strains used carried biobricks involved in tryptophan synthesis and/or export under control of an IPTG-inducible T7 promoter. 1.0 mM IPTG was added after 3 hours of growth to induce expression.

YddG: Tryptophan, Tyrosine, Phenylalanine exporter.

AroG: Gene involved in Tryptophan, Tyrosine, and Phenylalanine synthesis.

TrpE: Gene involved in Tryptophan synthesis.

YddG-AroG: Double gene construct carrying the YddG and AroG genes.

YddG-TrpE: Double gene construct carrying the YddG and TrpE genes.

Control: Empty vector
