Blackteria: Genetic sequence for the production of melanin
The MelA reporter (BBa_M50057) with a strong RBS added to it. A T-5 promoter and a PhageT7 terminator have been added to it as well. This sequence will enable bacteria, under the presence of Copper, to transform l-tyrosine to dopaquinone which turns into melanin nonenzymatically. Therefore, bacteria transformed with this sequence will look brown/black.
