FAT-2 delta 12 desaturase from C. elegans
This part contains only the coding region of the fat-2 ∆12-desaturase from “Caenorhabditis elegans” ([http://www.uniprot.org/uniprot/G5EGA5 UniProt:G5EGA5]):, the natural gene consists of three exons [1].
Usage and Biology
Fatty acyl desaturases act on acyl groups to introduce double bonds. Fat-2 is a ∆12 fatty acyl desaturase which is able to introduce a double bond in C16 and C18 fatty acids in “Caenorhabditis elegans”, and it has been shown to work as a ∆15 desaturase in yeast using oleic acid (C18:1∆9) as a substrate [2]. In nature the desaturation of fatty acids is important for keeping the cell membrane fluid in cold conditions [1].
Desaturases that are able to introduce double bonds beyond carbon 9 and 10 are interesting from a nutritional point of view because mammals lack this ability. This is why ω-6 linoleic acid and ω-3 linolenic acid is classified as essential fatty acids for mammals and these needs to be supplied through the diet.
Other desaturases has been submitted to the registry:
