The TA29 promoter permits the specific expression of genes under its regulation in the tapetum, a layer found in the anthers of flowring plants. One of the most used strategies related to biosafety in plants consists in producing male sterility. A cytotoxic gene (like barnase, ipt, RIP...) its control leads to a plant without fertile pollen, being unable to be self-pollinated and hence, unable to spread in an uncontrolled way in the field. TA29 promoter

The TA29 promoter is an anther-specific promoter. One of the most used strategies of biosafety in plants in male sterility. A cytotoxic gene (like barnase, ipt, RIP...) under the control of this promoter leads to a plant without fertile pollen. Our team used it in the construction of Part:BBa_K1554004 and Part:BBa_K1554005

Usage and Biology

The TA29 promoter permits the specific expression of genes under its regulation in the tapetum, a layer found in the anthers of flowring plants. One of the most used strategies related to biosafety in plants consists in producing male sterility. A cytotoxic gene (like barnase, ipt, RIP...) its control leads to a plant without fertile pollen, being unable to be self-pollinated and hence, unable to spread in an uncontrolled way in the field. Our team used it in the construction of Part:BBa_K1554004 and Part:BBa_K1554005, two biosafety modules for plants submitted to the Registry of Parts.
