Usage and Biology

pDawn-RBS32-mazF-TT can be used to photocontrol the expression of the toxin mazF. In this system pDawn (BBa_K1075044) can be regulated by blue light, while mazF acts as a killswitch.

MazF is a toxin, which is counteracted by its antitoxin MazE. MazF exhibits sequence-specific ribonuclease activity toward single- or double-stranded RNA regions, and the resulting degradation of cellular mRNA causes global translation inhibition.[http://www.cell.com/molecular-cell/retrieve/pii/S1097276503004027]
