pir gene
The pir gene encodes the pi protein. Initiation of replication at ori-gamma or other R6K origin of replication requires the pi protein in trans. Doubling the concentration of pi protein would, however, effectively shut down the replication. Expression of pi protein is autogenously regulated.
Usage and Biology
The presence of pir gene can allow maintenance of plasmids with R6K origins as their sole origin of replication.
