This part is a component in a secretion system using an Ice Nucleation Protein NC (INPNC) although it has been shown that the cleavage sequence is functional by itself.   When coupled with INPNC, the target protein will be secreted better since it allows protein fused to outer membrane proteins to be cleaved off forming a halo around the cell.

Park et al. have showed that the fusion of the complete phaZ1 gene (including SS) and a truncated ice nucleation protein from Pseudomonas syringae (BBa_K265008), could lead to stable expression and secretion of the phaZ1 gene product.
