A metabolically stable tmRNA in bacteria.
Usage and Biology
It has a unique structure with an alanyl tRNA-like structure at its 5′ and 3′ terminal sequences and an intermediate sequence encoding a tag peptide (tag peptide). In line with its unique structure, tmRNA has both tRNA and mRNA functions and participates in a specific translation reaction in cells, trans-translation, resulting in a chimeric protein with a tag peptide attached to the C-terminus.
