The DBLb domain of PF11_0521 PfEMP1
This biobrick is thought to be able to produce the DBLb domain of PfEMP-1. Plasmodium falciparum erythrocyte membrane protein 1 EMP1 is encoded by the clonally variant var gene family with approximately 60 members per parasite genome. The adhesion process of the PfEMP1 proteins is often described as a way for the parasite to evade splenic clearance and has also been reported as associated with vascular obstruction of vital organs leading to major pathological events.[1]. These proteins are also known for their ability to mediate adhesion of IEs to host receptors in the vasculature.[2]
The binding of PfEMP1 to ICAM-1 is mediated by a subset of Duffy binding-like (DBL) domains, the DBLβ domains, which are found in either A-type or BC-type PfEMP1.[4][5][6][7]. The PfEMP1 protein to the D1 domain of ICAM-1[3].
