Fatty Acid Biosynthesis.jpg
This part encodes an Acyl-ACP Reductase (AAR) - Synechococcus elongatus PCC7942 Acyl-ACP Reductase (AAR (BBa_K590032)) and Aldehyde Decarbonylase (ADC) - Synechococcus elongatus PCC7942 Aldehyde decarbonylase (ADC (BBa_K590031)) from Synechococcus elongatus PCC7942 behind a strong constituitive expression cassette, BBa_K314100 in the pSB1C3 vector. Transforming this part into any strain of E. coli will result in the production of alkanes, the primary component of diesel, without the need for any inducing agents. More information on the optimal conditions for alkane production as well as detailed protocols for growth, production, and analysis of alkanes can be found on the [http://2011.igem.org/Team:Washington 2011 University of Washington iGEM Team Wiki page].

Usage and Biology

When they are expressed together, AAR and ADC produce alkanes from the cell's fatty acid biosynthetic pathway. Alkane production is enhanced when growing expression strains using the growth conditions developed by the [http://2011.igem.org/Team:Washington 2011 University of Washington iGEM Team].

GC plot showing that alkanes are only produced when both ADC and AAR are expressed.
GC-MS quantification shows greater alkane production under UW iGEM 2011's "optimized conditions" (see wiki for [http://2011.igem.org/Team:Washington/Alkanes/Results details])
