RUBY is a reporter construct that is composed of the enzymes that are needed for the biosynthesis of betalain<sup>1</sup>. Betalain is a naturally occurring compound found in Caryophyllales and it produces a bright red color<sup>2</sup>. When used as a reporter, it will turn the transgenic plant tissue red and it does not need UV light to observe like a GFP reporter would, as seen in the figure below.
