An aptazyme is an aptamer-ribozyme combination with intrinsic RNA cleavage activity. This aptazyme sequence is specific for the theophylline (ligand). Theophylline (1,3-dimethylxanthine) is a drug used in therapy for respiratory diseases and is structurally similar to theobromine and caffeine. Aptazyme is composed of 3 different parts: a twister ribozyme module, a communication module and an aptamer module.
