RecA is a UV-light-inducible promoter. Trans is a "key" of sorts, acting on a complementary cis "lock" to allow the translation of ccdB, a kill gene. Together, the RecA+Trans system allows for the kill gene to be translated in the presence of UV light, through the indirect induction by way of the cis-trans system.

recA is a promoter that responds to DNA damage that can be caused by UV radiation (namely the formation of ssDNA). The trans-activating sequence that recA controls for is a "key" that unlocks cis-repressed RNA (crRNA), which is formed by having a cis-repressive sequence upstream of a gene. This is achieved by opening up the RBS that the cis-repressive sequence blocked off in the mRNA. As a result, protein expression will be allowed to occur. This part was designed for the purpose of unlocking ccdB crRNA that is coded for in part BBa_K1300001 as part of a kill switch system.

recA promoter + Key (taRNA)

recA is a promoter that responds to DNA damage that can be caused by UV radiation (namely the formation of ssDNA).
