Cytochrome A and X from Nitrosomonas europaea
Cytochrome A and cytochrome X ([http://ecocyc.org/NEUR228410/NEW-IMAGE?type=LOCUS-POSITION&object=GJNO-2382&chromosome=CHROMOSOME-1 link to Biocyc]) both from Nitrosomonas europaea.
The two cytochromes are involved in the process of transferring electrons from HAO to AMO in the following reactions:
HAO reaction, 2 electrons gained:
NH2OH + H2O + 2 cycAXox → NO2- + 2 cycAXred + 5 H+
AMO reaction 2 electrons used:
NH3 + O2 + cycAXred + 2 H+ → NH2OH + H2O + cycAXox
Usage and Biology
When highly expressed in E.coli the cells turn dark red. If grown on media with supplementation of d-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) it tends to get a darker color because of the extra heme incorporated.
