ChiXR originates from an intercistronic region of the chb operon in Salmonella and E. coli. The transcription of this operon is activated in the presence of the chitooligosaccharides as the genes included in this operon comprises for metabolism of these sugars. ChiXR destabilizes another regulatory small RNA called ChiX by binding to the stem of ChiX transcription terminator hairpin. It is fused with arabinose promoter (Para).

ChiXR originates from the integenic region between genes chbB and chbC of enterobacteriacea. chiXR is a poorly defined sRNA that regulates the chiP gene through trapping the downregulating chiX sRNA. chiXR therefore has an indirect stimulatory effect on ChiP synthesis. The E. coli chiXR gene has been put under the control of the arabinose promoter in this biobrick so as to easily control its expression.
