R5 is a short 19-amino acid peptide with multiple Lys catalytic groups that plays an important role in the formation of the siliceous cell wall of diatoms, and we wanted to use it to hydrolyze TEOS to generate silica and deposit silica on the surface of R5
Diatoms (Bacillariophyceae) are a group of abundant and diverse algae that are sheathed in a silicified external cell wall known as the frustule. The biomolecules responsible for diatom silicification8,9 include silicon-responsive12,13 silicifying polypeptides known as silaffins that were originally isolated as proteinaceous components of the frustule14 and have now been characterized in some detail.
