CrtE
CrtE is the gene which encodes geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase, an essential enzyme in the MVA pathway in plants, through which paclitaxel is eventually synthesized1. After GPP is converted into FPP, geranylgeranyl diphosphate synthase converts it into GGPP, an important precursor in the MVA pathway2. We are using this gene as part of our construct to ensure that paclitaxel is synthesized in the cytosol rather than through the MEP pathway in the chloroplast, which would complicate our project by requiring additional export tags.
