It is a component of the CcdA/CcdB Type II Toxin-antitoxin (TA) system. It encodes the CcdA antidote, which can prevent CcdB toxicity by forming a tight CcdA-CcdB complex. As a model system, by ensuring an antidote-toxin ratio greater than one, this mechanism might prevent the harmful effect of CcdB in plasmid-containing bacteria. The CcdA-CcdB toxin-antitoxin system we used is a killing switch that is relatively nontoxic to human and other mammalian cells.
