The AI-2 signal quorum-sensing signal molecule is actively transported into the cell by the LsrABC protein, before being phosphorylated by LsrK. Subsequently, Phospho-AI-2 derepresses LsrR from the operator region of the lsr operon, as stated above. In the absence of AI-2, both the lsrACDBFG operon and LsrR itself are repressed [1].
