Bacillus subtilis is a the most highly studied gram positive bacterium.
In particular, it possess effective secretion systems, is known to be naturally competent for the uptake of DNA and is highly motile.
Subspecies 168 is one of the most commonly used in the laboratory and its specific genome has been sequenced.
