The gene was selected from Deinococcus radiodurans due to the organism’s extremophilic properties. D.radiodurans exhibit several traits that would make it ideal in our imagined biogenic solar cell (see our design page), such as a high resistance towards ionizing radiation and dehydration. Although the translated protein does not necessarily exhibit the same resistances as the whole organism, it was selected to highlight our interest in D.radiodurans.
