luxR

LuxR is a component of the Quorum sensing system. Together with the other two components (Lux I and pLux) it is able to induce expression of a gene of interest. The amount of expression is based on cell population density. This system is originally from Alivibrio fischeri.

It acts as a repressor on P<sub><i>lux)</i></sub>; however, upon binding of acyl homoserine lactone (AHL), which is synthesized by LuxI, P<sub><i>lux)</i></sub> is released and expression of the downstream gene (e.g. a gene of interest) is induced. The level of expression is determined by cell population density in order to limit growth at higher cell densities.
