The enzyme is bifunctional and catalyses the conversion of glucosamine 1-phosphate to N-acetyl glucosamine 1-phosphate as well as the conversion of N-acetyl glucosamine 1-phosphate to UDP-N-acetyl glucosamine, a key precursor molecule for hyaluronic acid production.
