Encoded by the gene tupA from the facultative alkaliphilic strain Bacillus lentus C-125, TupA is a cytoplasmic protein consisting of 489 amino acid residues with a molecular mass of 57.3kDa. TupA homologues are distributed widely among strains of alkaliphilic Bacillus possessing TUP. The function of the TupA protein is not clear, although it was demonstrated that TupA is involved in TUP synthesis. One of the biological functions of TUP, is its involvement in maintaining pH homeostasis at a high pH conditions, under which there is a low level of the antiporter activity.
