NhaA; sodion-proton antiporter; membrane protein
The gene, NhaA, is the archetypal sodium/proton anti-porter in E. coli. It is the only member of the family that is absolutely required by E. coli for survival in high-salt conditions, under alkaline stress, or in the presence of otherwise toxic Lithium-ion concentration. NhaA catalyzes the exchange of 2 protons per sodium ion. Therefore, NhaA could make sure E. coli’s survival under alkaline pH, which are in desperate need in our project.
