NhaA; sodion-proton antiporter; membrane protein
The gene, nhaA, is the archetypal Na+/H+ anti-porter in E. coli. It is the only member of the family that is absolutely required by E. coli for survival in high-salt conditions, under alkaline stress, or in the presence of otherwise toxic Li+ concentration. NhaA catalyzes the exchange of 2 H+ per Na+. Therefore, nhaA could make sure E. coli’s survival under alkaline pH, which are in desperate need in our project.
