At the beginning of iGEM, it was difficult to get experiments to work as expected. With not much working in the lab, little documentation was produced. As the competition matured and labs became more used to making and testing BioBricks, more experiments worked, and documentation began to improve. We then changed the rules, requiring iGEMers to submit highly-documented parts to be eligible for medals. Now, iGEMers submit amazing parts with abundant documentation, not because we require them, but because iGEMers want to. They know this is how to get future teams to use parts and is a critical part of enriching the synthetic biology community.
The job of every iGEMer and contributor to the Registry is to make their part as awesome as possible to inspire users to use it in following years. We encourage everybody who contributes to the Registry to complete as much information as possible and to perform as much characterization as possible before sending us a sample. We also encourage teams to add parameters and categories to their parts. We use these metrics to create part tables that are automatically updated when you add categories.
We're compiled several "Top 10" lists of the most documented parts in the Registry. Please note that to calculate the amount of documentation, we look at the HTML code, which sometimes picks up a lot of code that isn't displayed. We also count information on the Design and Experiences pages, but don't take images into account at this time. Although there may be heuristic errors in our calculations, we're working on making them better and more accurate. Have a look at the parts below to see the most documented examples in the Registry.
