The lambda repressor is a dimeric protein also known as the cI protein. cI has a higher affinity for OR1 and OR2 operators, where binding positively regulates the pRM promoter. On the other hand, when bound to OR3 cI represses the promoter; however, due to a low binding affinity, a higher concentration of the protein is required. Thus, cI can act as both an activator -at low concentrations- and a repressor -at high concentrations- on pRM.
