Cell-to-cell signalling

Cell-to-cell signalling occurs in many biological contexts. Bacteria such as E. coli communicate with one another via secreted small molecules and this "quorum sensing" lets each cell know how dense the local population has become. In higher organisms many control systems involve similar processes where the signal molecules are hormones.
