Usage and Biology

PCB dechlorinases: pcbA5


PCB dechlorinases belong to a family of proteins called reductive dehalogenases, that remove chlorine groups from PCB. Removal of PCB from core biphenyl is approached differently by different group of organisms. For eukaryotes, fungi use laccases to dechlorinate PCB, while in bacteria, a modified version of biphenyl degradation pathway helps cells to survive in PCB-rich environments. For the archebacteria Dehalococcoides, it uses this reductive dehalogenase to dechlorinate PCB. This protein was supposed to dechlorinate most of the PCB molecules to lowly chlorinated PCB molecules in our system.


For our experimental purposes, we were trying to target the specific PCB mixture called Aroclor 1260, which was also used by the authors of the paper.
