TA29 promoter

The TA29 promoter is an anther-specific promoter. One of the most used strategies of biosafety in plants consist in producing in male sterility. A cytotoxic gene (barnase, ipt, RIP...) under the control of this promoter leads to a plant unable to produce pollen. Our team used it in the construction of Part:BBa_K1554004 and Part:BBa_K1554005.

Usage and Biology

The TA29 promoter permits the specific expression of genes under its regulation in the tapetum, a layer found in the anthers of flowering plants. Anthers are the male organs of the flower, and their function is to produce pollen. One of the most used strategies related to biosafety in plants consists in producing male sterility. A cytotoxic gene (barnase, ipt, RIP...) under its regulation leads to a plant without fertile pollen, being unable to be self-pollinated and hence, unable to spread in an uncontrolled way in the field. Our team used this part in the construction of Part:BBa_K1554004 and Part:BBa_K1554005, two biosafety modules for plants submitted to the Registry of Parts.
