DAM Methylase Dam is a base flipping enzyme. [More information is available at EcoGene: EG10204]. DNA adenine methyltransferase (Dam), which is responsible for methylation of nearly all GATC sequences in Escherichia coli , is encoded by the dam gene and occurs at about 130 molecules per rapidly growing cell . [More information is available at EcoCyc: EG10204].
Note: Immediately after DNA synthesis the daughter strand remains unmethylated for a short time.
